Privateer - Private person empowered to carry on all forms of hostility permissible by the usages of war. Including attacking foreign vessels and assets during wartime and taking them as prizes. Captured ships and assets are subject to condemnation and sale. With the proceeds sometimes divided between the privateer sponsors, shipowners, captains and crew. Some crews are made up of professional merchant seamen, others of pirates, debtors, and convicts.
