The Cock Rampant:
The cock as an important symbol is thought to date back as far as the classical ancient period, when Gallic culture depicted Lugus, an important Celtic deity, as a cock. Lugus is identified by Julius Caesar in De Bello Gallico as proximal in nature to the Roman deity Mercury, and eponymous locations are thought to include Lugdunum (Lyon), Lugdunum Clavatum (Laon), and Lugucalium (Carlisle). The cock was later increasingly associated with France as a Christian symbol of watchfulness and readiness for the return of Christ, through the strong Catholic faith of French kings possibly as far back as the first Christian king of France, Clovis I.
As the art of heraldry emerged during the middle ages, the cock was commonly incorporated as a supporter, holding or flanking the central shield in a design. Notable heraldic cocks include; King Henry VIII of England's use of a dragon and a cock as supporters on his arms, the official arms of Cambridge's Jesus College featuring a cock as the charge on the central shield, and several historic Polish arms including the arms of the Kurowie family.
Heraldic beasts come in varying poses known as attitudes. Many supporting beasts appear 'Rampant', reared on (hind, if quadrepedal) legs, with forelimbs poised to strike, or to support the central shield.
A rampant cock represents an aggressive and watchful entity, protective of its charges, proud of its past, and herald of momentous events to come.
