The Federation Pioneers were originally part of the Federation Navy.

Subsequently, they formed part of the engineering branch, in the logistic branch, part of the infantry; or comprised a branch in their own right.

Prior to and during the Caldari War, pioneers were often engaged in the construction and repair of jump bridges. Historically, the primary role of the pioneer units was to assist other arms in tasks such as the construction of field fortifications, small frontline outposts and jump bridges.

During the Caldari War, the Gallente military forces came to distinguish between small units of "assault pioneers" belonging to navy fleets and separate pioneer units.

With their limited member number the pioneers are considered tiny but somewhat effective and mobile if needed.
