So it happened one day on my travels I ran into an honest, but inquisitive pilot. "Sir", she enquired (for that is proper), "what a Shrike?".

While less than eloquently (or for that matter gramatically) put, I felt it prudent to respond. "Young One" (i knew not if she was indeed younger, but in the mentor-like position I was cast, I was at that time the senior), "there is no point to my explanation, but I shall continue if you are willing..".

She readily agreed, eyes wide to catch any stray detail; "Consider this, if you will, if you were a small but cunning creature, much like you are now, only presumably wiser in the ways of the universe", she appeared annoyed but remained receptive. "Consider the predicament this small creature is in, presumably self-sufficient, yet unable to do anything to preserve its fragile existence should something considerably larger or with greater cunning decide it is going to end", (she shuffled uneasily on her seat, as if suddenly with a realisation it was a bed of coals).

"But there is luck, right?", (she stared motionless, searching for the correct answer), "That favoured condition that allows success despite incompetence, that prolongs your existence for another day.

Do not be fooled, you are alive here and now because someone has chosen it to be so. Whether that happens to be God or I, or another, it matters not - save for that the choice is not yours. Does my ability to remove you now should I wish it make me any larger, or more cunning than you? No, it does not. Size and cunning are illusions maintained by those who promote them. What I have that you do not cannot be defined in a profile or state. I do because I can, just as do not because you cannot. Let not any creation of God or Man stop us on our path to the truth."

"But, what a Shrike?"
"I told you there was no point to my explanation..."
