Secure your connection

Comments Off on Secure your connection February 18th, 2012

In times where nobody is safe (in space or in the evil Internet) I added the option to secure your DOTLAN session. You’re now able to browse DOTLAN EveMaps fully encrypted through SSL. Until now only personal pages (like user section, my assets, etc) were secured through SSL.

You can enable “Forced SSL” in your user profile. As long as you’re logged in you’ll be using SSL at all times.

P.S. If you’re not able to access DOTLAN through plain HTTP (because your company proxy denies access) you can now go directly to the Login page (which is already SSL secured) login and from then on you’re good to go.

I hope you appreciate this option. Feedback and Donations are always welcome.

Updated Asset Viewer

3 Comments; February 15th, 2012

After CCP released a new API with the latest patch (the Location API) I found some time to enhance the already existing Asset Viewer to make use of the new features. After some research and tests here’s what the new Location API provides:

  • Coordinates of the items in space. With the XZY coordinates you can calculate if the item is in proximity to a bigger celestial and group things together (example: everything which is within 200.000km of a moon/planet)
  • The itemName (that’s how you named your ship, can, container, etc)

The Location API even provides you the data for items that are stored in a station (of course with the XYZ coordinates of the station). This is the last bit of information you all waited for. Having your AssetList under your fingertips (out-of-game) and to find out in which of the 100 Station Container your T3 BPO (joking) is buried.

But just having the Asset Viewer for your personal items would be boring and mostly useless. The last 2 screenshots contain some information about how this would look like if you would use this system for your corporation. But that’s a different story for a different day *hint* 🙂

Social Stuff – Update

7 Comments; February 13th, 2012

Despite the fact that most of the big social networking sites are pretty big spiders and grab every data they can get hold of, I got convinced to add a share button for those nasty things and hope this will bring some more entertainment for your and interaction.

Update:

After some experiments with addthis.com I decided to  avoid an additional data spider that just wants to collect the juicy userdata on my page and just replace it with a dotlan-style dropbox that redirects you to your network where you wanna cross post the content. It fits better into the style. I hope you like it.

Google Chrome Update

3 Comments; February 8th, 2012

Ladies and Gents: Please update your Google Chrome Browser now. With the new release of the newest stable version version (v17) the already reported SVG rendering bugs (where visited systems were rendered black) has been fixed. It’s about time …

Enjoy clutter free and clean maps again.

Map rendering issues with Chrome

8 Comments; December 20th, 2011

In the recent days you and I stumpeld across a strange rendering issue on the svg maps. Some systems are filled purely with black. Since the svg map rendering and xml layout hasn’t been changed for the whole evemaps lifecycle.

After debugging the SVG and stripping it down, I could identify that there’re some a:visited flags that are causing the current version of Chrome (16.0.912.63 m) to fill the system completely black.

UPDATE:

Atm I don’t see a chance for a workaround. It seems to be buried deep in the SVG render code of webkit. In this case we’ve to wait for a Chrome Update or use Chrome15, Firefox, Opera or IE9 for the moment.

There’s already a bug report out for chromium and webkit.

No Jumps Into Wormhole Space

2 Comments; November 28th, 2011

Looks like you’ll soon miss a feature on DOTLAN EveMaps. CCP decided to remove the “jumps” indicator in the EVE API for wormhole systems. This means you’ll no longer be able to see or track the activity of a particular wormhole on DOTLAN EveMaps or any other wormhole related website or tool.

This will make the wormhole space more dangerous as it already is. Watch out!

This makes totally sense to bring the ingame feeling in line with the API, etc. But CCP: When do we get access to “public” information via the EVE API that’s available for everybody in the ingame map? Pilots in space? Incursions and their states? Military, Industry and Strategic Index Levels?

I’ll guess I’ll remove the jump graphics and stats from the system details page soon to avoid confusion.

Before it’s completely covered in dust

2 Comments; November 15th, 2011

Some time ago I started to create an offline asset viewer integrated in DOTLAN EveMaps. The first iteration was my personal corp management application but I thought it would be more useful when it’s usable for the lone pilot to dig through your personal belongings as well.

I had already a couple friends testing it before I nearly forgot to open it for the public. And before the feature is covered in dust (like my ingame assets are already) I’ll provide it to you. This will be an open beta.

Initially I was planning to create some pro-features that require some sort of subscription fee but atm I don’t find the time to either spend the ISK or play the game probably.

So here we go.

DOTLAN Personal Asset Viewer

  • requires a linked API Key with AssetList
  • dig through your assets using a tree navigation (even with arrow keys)
  • search through the assets of your pilot.
Keep in mind (atm) you can only view and search through the assets of one pilot at a time. There’s no consolidated asset tree over all your characters yet.

Just a quick wrap up from the last 24h. Yesterday at 10am GMT one of my disks (lvm slice) was running full. Of course programs and databases don’t like when they don’t have any space left to write their temp data (sessions, updates, etc).

The first problem was solved pretty quickly. I just had to offline evemaps, extend the lvm slice and start evemaps again and do some checks and repair some of the database tables … Problemo solved …

Sometimes problems could be that easy (if they would be detected early enough), but not in this case: a different background job found some corrupted caches and didn’t had anything better to do then spam bullshit into the logfile, etc that fast that the drive was full again in the middle of the night.

Anyway … problem was finally fixed at 6am GMT this morning. I’ll keep an eye on the current situation.

Added Corporation/Alliance Movements

1 Comment October 1st, 2011

Just a quick note: I added membership changes / movements (member count) as an additional tab to the alliance section.

You can see the biggest alliance and corporation moves of pilots in the last 7 and 30 days sorted by the delta. Movements in the NPC corporations are excluded.

Have fun exploring the data.

Added EveWho Support

4 Comments; October 1st, 2011

After speaking with Squizz Caphinator on IRC I finally found some time to add a tab called “Pilots” to his service EveWho.com into the corporation and alliance info pages.

So what the hell is EveWho.com? Basically he (Squizz) is doing the same what I do but more focused on characters. His site is basically doing public CharacterInfo API calls (like ingame ‘Show Info’) on lots of characterIDs he collected over time. His database contains more then 2 million known pilots in Eve. Put those information together an you’ll find very handy corp and alliance membership lists. Very interesting Intel if you’re doing research on your enemy or aggressor.

Sure the one type of players love this amount of information, the others are hate it and rising the “no privacy” flag about their secret alts. CCP already said that evewho.com is only using legal API methods to collect all this information.

In the end it’s up to you if you wanna use evewho.com to find more about the corps and pilots in eve or not.
