Sovereignty Calculation 14days != 14days

June 2nd, 2009

Quote from the Eve-Online Evelopedia

Sovereignty 2: Requirement : Territory level (1) Sovereignty undisrupted for fourteen days.
Sovereignty 3: Requirement : Protectorate level (2) Sovereignty undisrupted for fourteen days.

As we usually know and expect, it always takes 14 days to upgrade the system from sovereignty level 1 to 2 and 14 days as well to finally reach level 3. But under unknown circumstances it seems CCP may has problems doing their calculation right. It looks like 14 days in real life aren’t always 14 days in New Eden. Even if we nearly using the same calendar.

I’m storing the sovereignty history of each system in my database. When I started to do some sovereignty calculations, I found some  irregularities which were really strange. It looked like that sometimes a systems holds sov 1 for 13 days and ticks over to sov 2  in the next downtime (which is the normal case) and sometimes after 14 days  (plus the next downtime).

After some short queries 🙂 I found those funny sovereignty entries in my history table.

As you can see, we’ve systems that got their sovereignty upgrade both on the 26 May 2009 but got the previous sov level on the 12th and 13th. Didn’t we had a patch day somewhere in that area. It really looks like that CCP has some problems calculating their sovereignty during extended downtimes, but that’s only an expectation.

This might not be a problem for people who’re upgrading from sov 1 to sov 2, but alliances who’re doing their calculation right and waiting to login after downtime for onlineing in their cyno generators might have problems with this.

Additionally: on the 26th May 2009 CCP didn’t had a single sovereignty upgrade (expect one sov 4 upgrade) as well as yesterday, the 1st June 2009.

This is just a guess and may be totally unrelated to reality but perhaps it has something to do with the exact timestamp the towers claiming sov are anchored. Sort of a rounding issue. If the timestamp doesn’t correspond during the downtime checks, it tacks on an extra day. i.e. the tower was originally anchored right before downtime so the original “day” doesn’t count.

I don’t think it’s an rounding issue, because the stuff is calculated from downtime to downtime. Take this System as example:

      https://evemaps.dotlan.net/system/Z-XX2J

      Sov 1: 2009-05-04
      Sov 2: 2009-05-18 (14 days later)
      Sov 3: 2009-06-02 (15 days later)

That doesn’t match really. Compared with all the patches in the last weeks and many issues i really think there’s something related to extended downtimes. I could even find more broken date calculation where the upgrade took 15 days instead of 14. Mostly in 4 week period around bigger upgrades (like the major patches 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after). But it’s not predictable. I just see many strange behaviors.

    I say it’s the API that’s broken :p

/me revs up the BLAME API engine!

But it’s always fun to mine the data you have o/

I am in a heated discussion with a GM at the moment regarding sovereignty rules with regards to contesting Sov.

Eve-O clearly defines the rules in this thread –

    http://wiki.eveonline.com/wiki/Sovereignty_(Mechanics)#Contesting

And under the title “Contesting” it clearly states the following –

    # If a large control tower is used to claim sovereignty, any sovereignty claims from any small or medium control towers are not counted.
    # If however a system is tied on large/med towers, sov claims from medium/small towers can be used to tip the sov in the favour of the alliance with the most towers. For example: Alliance A has 4 larges and 1 med vs Alliance B has 4 larges, Alliance A wins. Alliance A has 4 meds, alliance B has 4 meds 1 small, Alliance B wins, etc.

In our specific case, we have a large and 3 mediums in a system. Our enemy dropped 1 large and we lost Sov from 3 to neutral.

CCP needs to get their act together with regards to POS mechanics and sovereignty rules.
